Day of German Unity - Friday, 3 October 2025 

East and West Germany were re-united 35 years ago. The Unification Treaty, which incorporated the former German Democratic Republic (GDR) into the Federal Republic of Germany, came into force on 3 October 1990, bringing an end to 45 years of Germany’s division.

Please note that 3 October is a public holiday in Germany. Shops will therefore be closed on this day. Restaurants and bars may also operate on a different schedule or be closed.

Reichstag Building

Brandenburg Gate

The imposing Brandenburg Gate was built in the 18th century in neoclassical style and once marked the entrance to the city. It is located at the end of the famous street "Unter den Linden".

Victory Column

Berlin’s Victory Column is another impressive landmark of the city that stands in the centre of the Great Star Roundabout, located at the heart of the sprawling Tiergarten park. You can climb up the 285 steps of the Victory Column and enjoy a panoramic view of Berlin from the viewing platform.

Gendarmenmarkt 

Surrounded by the German cathedral, the French cathedral and the Konzerthaus Berlin, the square of Gendarmenmarkt was formed at the end of the 17th century and is considered an architectural masterpiece and one of the most beautiful and best-known squares in Berlin.

Charlottenburg Palace & Palace Park 

The Charlottenburg Palace was built at the end of the 17th century as a summer residence for Sophie Charlotte, the wife of the Prussian Elector Frederick III. It is the largest and most magnificent palace in Berlin and an outstanding example of Baroque and neoclassical architecture. Today it accommodates numerous important art collections. The spacious palace park is one of the oldest and most beautiful gardens in Berlin.

East Side Gallery 

The East Side Gallery is located on a 1.3-kilometre section of the former Wall. After the fall of the Wall in 1989, artists from around the globe painted more than 100 graffiti artworks, addressing themes such as freedom, peace and the division of Germany.

Wall Museum at Checkpoint Charlie 

The Wall museum was opened in 1962 – just one year after the construction of the Berlin Wall – and is considered one of the oldest museums dedicated to the history of the division of Germany.

Checkpoint Charlie gained international fame as key crossing point between East and West Berlin through one particular event: In October 1961, US and Soviet tanks faced each other threateningly at this place in the centre of Berlin.

Berlin has its own style. You are bound to find something for your wardrobe among the many shopping options.
